Championing Workplace Accessibility: Employer’s Conference 2024

Held on November 15, 2024, this year’s conference focused on Workplace Accessibility and Career Advancement: A Framework for Deaf Success, a theme that resonated deeply with industry leaders, employers, and advocates for an inclusive workforce.

The conference opened with an enthusiastic welcome from the event’s emcee, Francis Ethelbert Pagaduan, setting the tone for a day filled with learning, collaboration, and actionable insights. Miss Thomastine Sarchet, Assistant Professor at The Rochester Institute of Technology – National Technical Institute for the Deaf, delivered the Opening Remarks, emphasizing the need for systemic change in hiring and supporting Deaf employees.

 

The event gathered esteemed professionals who shared their expertise in accessibility, career coaching, and leadership strategies for Deaf success. The sessions explored innovative policies, employee engagement, and strategies for fostering long-term career growth.

The first keynote speaker, David NelsonPassenger Accessibility Manager at Amtrak’s Accessibility Office, shed light on ADA compliance, accessibility initiatives, and engaging with the disability community. His session highlighted Amtrak’s approach to ensuring inclusive travel experiences and employee support systems. The open forum that followed allowed attendees to engage in meaningful discussions, addressing real-world challenges and opportunities for Deaf professionals.

Following this, Mia Anonuevo, a Senior Data Analyst and Deaf community advocate, took the stage. A graduate of De La Salle – College of St. Benilde, she provided insights into her personal and professional journey, emphasizing the importance of advocacy and leadership in advancing Deaf employment opportunities.

Panel Discussion: Innovative Strategies for Deaf Success

A key highlight of the conference was the panel discussion on “Innovative Policies, Partnerships, and Career Coaching for Deaf Success.” Moderated by Bronson Escalderon, the panel featured distinguished speakers:

  • Miss Pilar Baltazar  a seasoned leader in financial services and a champion of Diversity & Inclusion at Manulife.

  • Miss Beth Karbowski – a PhD scholar in Global Leadership and advocate for Deaf employment initiatives in Southeast Asia.

  • Mr. Michael Panlaqui – a Human Resources leader at Bayer Philippines, shared insights on integrating Deaf employees into essential roles and fostering career growth.

The discussion tackled best practices in hiring Deaf talent, mentorship programs, and leadership’s role in supporting inclusivity. Panelists emphasized that beyond corporate social responsibility, organizations must implement long-term strategies for career advancement and leadership opportunities for Deaf professionals.

The conference concluded with a certificate presentation to honor the speakers and their contributions, followed by a networking session that encouraged further discussions and collaboration among attendees.
